OSP102: Applied Outside Plant Design

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to provide application-based knowledge of all aspects of the Outside Plant (OSP) installation process. During this course, students will apply what they have learned through a series of design exercises such as route design, selecting cables to be housed in the pathways and spaces, identifying splice configurations based on proposed route, planning new OSP cable plant and developing a preliminary budget for the project.

Why you should attend?

  • Learn design issues related to underground, direct-buried and aerial cable plant.
  • Gain an understanding of common elements to all Outside Plant projects.
  • Learn to select industry-recognized cables for your cabling system, codes and standards, permits, and right of way requirements.

What to expect?

Material Requirements

  • E-Book or hard copy: Outside Plant Design Reference Manual (OSPDRM).
  • Order the OSPDRM online at bicsi.org/publications. The manual is not included in the course fee.
  • Students are also required to bring an internet capable (i.e., laptop, tablet, smart phone) device to class each day.

Pre-work Recommendations

  • Complete the online OSP 101: Introduction to Outside Plant Design and the ICT Fundamentals Design program prior to attending this class.
  • In addition, read the OSPDRM before coming to class.

Who should attend?

This course is designed as a hands-on course, providing an engaging and active learning experience by using real-world scenarios to design underground, direct-buried and aerial plants. This course will greatly benefit individuals who want to make OSP engineering or design their profession; individuals charged with the maintenance of OSP facilities; OSP designers looking for a refresher or wanting to learn new techniques; individuals involved in the construction of an OSP system; and individuals planning to sit for the OSP Designer exam.

Participants must be able to:

There are no special physical requirements for this course

What will I learn?

After this course you will have knowledge in the following areas:

  • Identify the components of an outside plant infrastructure, pathways, and spaces
  • Describe effective route designs and media solutions for outside plants.
  • Identify the primary codes and standards as well as grounding and bonding requirements associated with OSP installation
  • Locate requirements in project documentation, including an RFQ, scope of work, and other information typically established during a site and/or field survey
  • Identify underground, direct-buried, and aerial sections of a route; special design considerations; minimum components of a maintenance plan; and information that is needed to provide a cost estimate

How long is this course?

5-days

Can I earn credit?

Yes, you can earn 35 continuing education credits (CECs) towards an existing BICSI credentials recertification requirements, upon successfully completing this program.

What is the cancellation policy?
